Self Portrait

Self Portrait---

I am a quiet person possibly the first time I meet anyone or around people I do not know. After I get to know "you" I am pretty outgoing. Although, I am shy at times I like meeting people and making new friends. My God comes first in my life. My family is strong and I could not live without them. Therefore, my faith and family influence everything I do. Some words that could describe me are: easy going, sweet, and fun to be around. I am pretty relaxed but set in my ways and beliefs so I can be stubborn at times.

My alter ego... I don't have a "bad girl bone" in my body... If anything I do think about the "partying/wild" lifestyle but that may be because I watch mindless TV shows on MTV. Glitter, make-up, big hair, diamonds, money... these all come to my mind. Perhaps fame and fortune, the glitz and glamor, fashion.

George Krause and Mary Ellen Mark

George Krause

I am drawn to this image, the contrast between her skin and the background is beautiful. One thing that really captured my attention was how her body was positioned, starting from the point of her foot there is a line that travels along her bottom and up her back, it is stunning. Also, the angle and position of her body gives the photograph a sense of movement, even if the model was not waving the fabric, my eye still travels upward. The fabric that she is waving creates more excitement as my eye travels up and then side to side.

Krause's work really captures the contrast between light and dark. In many ways, I am drawn to his techniques because that is one of the things I would like to explore more. Using models skin to make a photograph is also something I also admire about his work and one day hope to experience myself.

This photograph is from her Miami Beach collection. When I first saw the collection I was not expecting older adults, when I think of Miami Beach I think spring breakers and parties. So, this collection shocked me and made me smile a little because I wasn't expecting images like this. However, this images caught my attention the most because it was so unexpected. It's kind of humorous because you see three older ladies with a guy holding a megaphone behind them. I really get involved with the photograph because I can feel like I am sitting in the water with them and also I start wondering about what they are doing. This photograph is wonderful because it places the viewer in the photograph and tells a story.

As I began viewing more of her work, her photographs really did start telling story's. Some of the images captured my attention so much that I felt sympathy or happiness towards her subjects. I enjoyed this about her work, I felt something more then it being just a photograph.

The two images depict to me a sense of hopelessness, the children's faces are pitiful. I admire how she captures her subjects true self, you find emotion and personality behind their eyes.

Henri Cartier- Bresson

I like his work because it enables the viewer to feel as though they are involved in his work. Many of these photographs create a sense of space  for the viewer whether it is apart of the crowded street or a quiet empty road. His work is very easy to get involved with and that is one reason I like his photographs.Cartier- Bresson subject often times do not realize that he is capturing  them, it is not a posed position he is looking for.

This photograph of these women portrays a pause to their perhaps daily activity. He does not wait for them to stop what they are doing, he captures them at the heart of the action.

In the video he states, " I'm hooked on drawing, go back to your first love". When he stated that, I felt like I could relate because my true passion is drawing, but I also love photography. I admire his sketches and drawing because there is a looseness and expression that I have a hard time trying to create.

What to write about now

I hope to gain from this class a better understanding of how to properly take digital images. I am not experienced in Photo Shop, so I look forward to learning how to manipulate images on the computer. I love taking pictures, and I believe this class will teach me how to better my skills and become more knowledgeable in the world of photographic arts.
